05 apr A website you can install? – Meet the PWA!
Maybe you have noticed some websites offer themself to be installed?
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) have been around a while – the term refers to web applications that behaves like a native apps.
Amongst other things PWAs support:
📱 Installing to home screen
📱 Push notifications
📱 Offline mode
Big players are embracing PWAs – one major brand that raised a lot of attention by doing this is Twitter – other known players are Forbes, Pinterest and Uber.
When compared to simple web applications, PWAs show several advantages since web applications are strictly limited by the capabilities of the browser.
For now PWA support is somewhat limited on iOS devices, but that is changing.
Android has great PWA support thanks to Android’s open-source approach.
But what’s in it for me?
- Faster – loading in an instant
- You can use the app while being offline

- One-click access – save as an icon on your phone home screen
